I think she initially had troubles singing on a big stage in a big arena, especially with the wall of sound. I believe she claimed that she could not really hear things and that was why she was off key in a lot of the '72-74 shows. There was an interview with her posted here a few years ago where she says she can't listen to any of these shows because of how bad she sounds. After the break and with JGB in '76-78 the shows were in much smaller venues and i think she was more comfortable. Also with JGB they never asked her to be Janis Joplin like they did with PITB and Greatest Story. She doesn't have a strong enough voice for that and the results were less than desirable. However none of that explains what happened in this Scarlet. There is no way that what she was attempting to do could have sounded good. I actually think it is so bad that i usually start laughing when i listen to this show.

Thanks for the info, that makes a lot of sense. I think she's a fantastic gospel singer; those are the songs with JGB where she sounds the best, though she's usually harmonizing beautifully in all the songs.

True. That's the part I can't understand, it's like, WHAT are you trying to do here, whose idea was this? Did *she* want to do it and no one had the heart to tell her it didn't sound so good? Or did they all think it sounded fine?

"I actually think it is so bad that i usually start laughing when i listen to this show."

Yeah. I'm glad when there's a forewarning, otherwise some of her outbursts can actually scare me. I jump in my seat.

Holy shit, I thought she was in labor. Scary.

Yeah, I really agree she sang better with JGB. Hers is not a rock 'n roll voice, much more suited to singing quietly. Her pitch is usually quite good, but her vocal timbre goes out the window when she tries to go loud.
